Panel Discussion on IoT-enabled Data Analytics

We would like to highlight a panel discussion on loT (Internet of Things) – enabled Data Analytics: Opportunities, Challenges and Applications at the INFORMS annual meeting that was held on Nov. 1st – Nov. 4th, in Philadelphia, PA.

In particular, four prestigious panelists joined this session, including Prof. Benoit Montreuil (Georgia Institute of Technology), Prof. George Q. Huang (Hong Kong University), Prof. Soundar Kumara (Penn State University), and Prof. Diego Klabjan (Northwestern University) who all have been the leading scholars in this field. INFORMS 2015 Data Mining Best Student Paper Award

The Data Mining (DM) Section of INFORMS announces the Best Student Paper Award to recognize excellence among its student members. Four finalists for the Best Student Paper Award will be selected by a panel of members of the DM section on any topic related to data mining by a student author.

Rules and Information:

1.        The presenting student author must be a student on or after January 1, 2015.

2.        The research must have been conducted while the presenting author was a student.

3.        The paper must be written by the student author(s) with minor assistance from advisors.

The Quality Statistics and Reliability (QSR) Section of INFORMS announces the Best Student Paper Award to recognize excellence among its student members. The award program brings prestige to the QSR Section as well as to the recipients honored.

Four finalists for the Best Student Paper Award will be selected to make presentations on Monday, November 2nd, 2015 at the INFORMS Annual Meeting in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. An introduction to Big Data Analytics

In this article, I will give a brief introduction on Big Data analytics. The goal here is to provide a basic understanding for the general public without previous trainings in this field.

If using one sentence to explain this term “Big Data analytics” in my words, it refers to a scientific process of transforming from data-rich to decision-mart.

1. What is Big Data?

Big Data is often characterized by the following three “Vs” of challenges:

  • Volume: The size of the data is huge
  • Velocity: The speed of data collection is fast
  • Variety: The category of the data is diverse

Recently, some applications also put forward an additional “V” challenge in Big Data:

  • Veracity: The quality of the data is unreliable
