What are the best tools used to forecast stock developments over the next quarters? Would using R or python to download information from yahoo finance and running a simulation based on those data be a good tool?

Looking from 5 months in the future of this post. It is easy to see why regardless of how sound a statistical projection is, you never know what is truly going to happen. Any statistical model made in December surely would have no idea the economic apocalypse we have experienced recently. But generally speaking, some form of the statistically backed forecast is a sound method for projecting stocks.

Check out Quandl in python. Great source for data. You can use a lot of methods to forecast stock price there isn’t a simple answer. I would recommend reading Nate Silver’s “The Signal and the Noise” to learn more about forecasting in general.
